A dog mounting a woman shown on Love Soup on UK TV

Postby masterdp » Mon Oct 17, 2011 9:29 pm

The show love soup in the UK recently featured a naked woman bending down then being mounted and "raped" by a dog, due to the dogs previous routinely having sex with him and well trained to do so. Apparently the BBC did like it but the general audience thought it was great!

The Brand and Ross episode is certainly not a single low point in tasteless broadcasting by the BBC.

Back in April, the BBC comedy drama Love Soup showed a naked woman being 'raped' by a dog.

Viewer Graham White, a Scottish-based writer, was so offended he complained to both the BBC and the media watchdog Ofcom.
Controversial: A scene from BBC show Love Soup - the comedy drama showed a naked woman being 'raped' by a dog which Ofcom claimed did not breach its regulations

But Ofcom's ruling on that matter must cast serious doubt on any verdict that it makes on the Brand/Ross debacle.

The watchdog defended the show and ruled that the sickening scene did not breach its regulations under the Communications Act.

Mr White claimed Ofcom described Love Soup as a 'post-watershed comedy drama' and claimed that viewers were familiar with its 'off-the-wall and irreverent humour'.

He said Ofcom's reply to his complaint pointed out that it had to protect the 'rights of the artist to creative freedom' under the Human Rights Act.

The Love Soup plot involved the dog's woman owner committing suicide, leaving the animal to be looked after by a friend. It was the friend who was subjected to the attack.

Mr White said Ofcom told him that 'the presentation and concept were clearly absurd and not intended to satirise the subject of suicide or sexual abuse'.

According to Mr White, the regulator went on to insist that, under the Broadcasting Code, programme-makers must have their rights to freedom of expression protected - no matter what offence they may cause - and cited the Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention on Human Rights to justify its decision. 'No subject is exempt from comedy,' Ofcom decreed.

'It then said that the programme's creators must have the 'right to receive and perform creative material, information and ideas without interference (subject to legal restrictions)'.

The offending episode of Love Soup was written by David Renwick, creator of the award-winning One Foot In The Grave.

Mr White said: 'I have seen and enjoyed this engaging series a couple of times in the past, so I expected a light comedy.

'But the story line in this particular episode missed the mark by a very long way.

'In the middle of the programme we were abruptly shocked with an extremely violent and realistic suicide of a woman leaping from a ten-storey building and smashing into the concrete pavement.

'It transpired that the woman had left behind a dog which was then adopted by Milly - played by Montserrat Lombard.

'Viewers were then treated to a graphic portrayal of this young woman, kneeling naked in the bathroom to retrieve a contact lens, being "raped" by the said dog.

'The suicide victim had been having sex with her dog for many years - and the animal had effectively been trained to target a kneeling woman.'

Mr White said: 'These programme makers have a very perverted sense of what is judged to be light comedy by the public. It wasn't just bad taste it was the most execrable taste.

'The BBC used to be full of great figures. But now we have people who have no loyalty to this country or to its values, people who think that to stand up for decency isn't cool.'

On Tuesday a spokesman for Ofcom said: 'All I can say is all complaints are assessed against the broadcasting standard.'

The journalist who authored that article, ironically, never considered that I would view this article as light comedy.
